The Truth About Our Tap Water and How We Can Protect Ourselves

June 27th, 2014 by Annette

Your body is under attack by toxins each day and since industries continue to dump synthetic chemicals into our air, food and water, it has become impossible to completely avoid.  We are learning the hard way through the rise of cancer and disease that these modern day, man-made chemicals are causing us more harm than good. Next to air, the water you drink, cook with and bathe in is the most important element for survival.

As I was researching our long island water treatment, I was so amazed to hear some of these shocking facts that I had to share.

As you already know, all of Long Island’s drinking water is drawn from underground reservoirs, known as aquifers, which means we rely on groundwater for 100% of our drinking water.

But what you may not know is that the EPA has set standards for more than 80 contaminants that may occur in drinking water and pose a risk to human health. The New York Times reported that in the last three years more than 9,400 of the 25,000 U.S. sewage systems have violated the law by dumping untreated or partially treated human waste, chemicals and other hazardous materials into rivers, lakes and other waterways.

If your home uses well water, chances are your water has been contaminated by many toxic substances that have been dumped and continue to be dumped into the soil some may include the following:

  • Herbicides
  • pesticides
  • estrogen mimicking hormones
  • drug residues
  • heavy metals

Since the EPA does not monitor or treat private well drinking water, you need to test once a year to see what harmful contaminants you’re pumping into your home every day!

If you rely on a government regulated water facility, unfortunately you cannot trust officials to keep the water safe and clean. According to the EPA, you need to be concerned with the disinfection by-products (DBPs) that form when disinfectants used to treat drinking water react with naturally occurring materials in the water. The predominant byproducts that result from use of chlorine as a disinfectant are Trihalomethanes – THMs (chloroform, bromoform, bromodichloromethane, and dibromochloromethane) and Haloacetic acids- HAAs (monochloro-, dichloro-, trichloro-, monobromo-, dibromo-).

These DBPs are incredibly toxic. Trihalomethanes (THMs) are Cancer Group B carcinogens, meaning they’ve been shown to cause cancer in laboratory animals. The EPA regulates four members of the trihalomethane family, the best known of which is Chloroform. Today, the U.S. government classifies chloroform as a “probable” human carcinogen. California officials consider it a “known” carcinogen. WOW! that is scary.  Hundreds more are unregulated. Scientists suspect that trihalomethanes in drinking water may cause thousands of cases of bladder cancer every year. Studies show that these chemicals have also been linked to colon and rectal cancer, birth defects, low birth weight and miscarriage.

“Cancer risk among people drinking chlorinated water is 93% higher than those whose water does not contain chlorine.”  -U.S. Council of Environmental Quality

As reported in New Scientist, a comprehensive survey of U.S. drinking water revealed the 11 most frequently detected toxic pharmaceuticals were:

Atenolol, a beta-blocker used to treat cardiovascular disease.

Atrazine, an herbicide banned in Europe, has been implicated in declining fish stocks.

Carbamazepine, a mood-stabilizing drug used to treat bipolar disorder.

Estrone, an estrogen hormone blamed for causing gender changes in fish.

Gemfibrozil, an anti-cholesterol drug.

Meprobamate, a tranquilizer used in psychiatric treatment.

Naproxen, a painkiller and anti-inflammatory linked to increases in asthma incidence.

Phenytoin, an anticonvulsant used to treat epilepsy.

Sulfamethoxazole, an antibiotic

TCEP, a reducing agent used in molecular biology.

Trimethoprim, an antibiotic.

You are not only DRINKING these contaminates, you are also inhaling and absorbing them through the pores of your skin. During a shower, the combination of what your skin absorbs and what your lungs inhale adds up to more than 8 glasses of water. (source) The concentrations of chlorine in your shower could also be damaging your hair, drying your skin, irritating your eyes and affecting the protein throughout your entire body.

If you and your children enjoy swimming in a pool, you may want to know according to the American Journal of Epidemiology, swimming in traditional and salt water chlorinated pools boosts bladder cancer risk by 57%.

I have talked to so many people who seem to think salt water pools are safer and sadly that is not the case.

Let’s not forget about food preparation. I try to buy organic foods, especially fruits and veggies, whenever possible. I’m learning that high quality water is essential to ensuring you receive the best nutrition possible from your foods since these contaminants quickly get absorbed while you are washing and boiling them.

The bottom line is that if you are drinking, cooking and bathing in unfiltered water everyday, you are overwhelming your body. Your organs need a CLEAN source of water to detoxify and eliminate your daily toxic buildup, without that, toxins will win the battle.

We all know we need to kill the bacteria found in our water source to avoid bacterial infections, but we don’t want to come down with cancer in the process! You want to be your healthiest and there is a better way… A whole home water filtration system.  It’s often the easiest, most affordable choice. It offers convenience and peace of mind knowing you’re doing your best to protect you and your children from the health hazards of unfiltered tap water. If you have a chlorinated pool and are concerned…an Ultraviolet (UV) pool filtration system might be another great choice.

But every home is different and each person is unique so get an evaluation first.
